Review: Crafty Kids!

Review_ Crafty Kids, Hudderfield
The idea of somewhere to do messy play that doesn’t make a mess of your own house sounds like a dream doesn’t it?
Well in the sleepy village of Denby Dale in Huddersfield, there is a place that is designed for just that! Crafty Kids is only into their second month of business but I can see it being a very big success!
Here’s Jess Wood, the founder & manager of Crafty Kids to tell us more…

1. Tell me a little about your family? I have a very close supportive family, who have all been amazing throughout this huge learning curve of setting up a new business so far! I can’t thank them enough. I am also a very proud mum.
2. Where did the inspiration come for Crafty Kids?
As a busy working mum I struggled to find an environment offering a great alternative to soft play and allowing children to make fun crafty projects taking the hard work out of messy play at home. With my extensive nursery nurse experience and child care qualifications I am very passionate about allowing children to try new things and learning in an environment such as Crafty Kids where anything is possible! I will also be offering Crafty Kids parties making it easy for parents and for kids to enjoy.
3. What are the aims of Crafty Kids?
At Crafty Kids we aim to provide a bright, colourful and creative environment for carers to spend quality time with their children! Crafty Kids is an exciting new craft venue for children aged 0-8 years. A world of craft materials and resources for your little ones to get crafty with. Children can take home whatever they make. Designed to take the hard work out of messy play at home, customers and children will experience an interactive and bright play environment where children can learn and make crafty delights.   Together with fantastic customer service, and product knowledge, I hope Crafty Kids will become a destination they will come back to time and time again.
4. What’s your favourite creative activity to do with your children?
I love creating personalised gifts and cards with Poppy at home! Around Christmas time we have a production line of handprints, glitter, glue and card ready to make the classic Christmas Tree card! It’s a large operation in our home! I’m looking forward to sharing some of my ideas and creations at Crafty Kids!

5. What’s the best thing about being a Mummy?
The best part about being a mummy has to be watching Poppy grow up into the lovely little girl she is! She makes me very proud everyday. And although sometimes she can be a little madam she never fails to make me laugh.

How cute is Poppy??!

Jess kindly invited me and Mini R to go and test out Crafty Kids for ourselves and, I have to say, I was super excited! As a creative person myself, I love to encourage this in my son but I’m also a bit of a clean freak with a slight case of OCD and this does not mix well with water, sand, paint, glue, glitter and all those lovely things! Ironically, I wrote this post only a week or so ago, yet here I am encouraging it!
Crafty Kids is situated in a bright and airy room which has been decorated with colour accessories to appeal to their audience of little people. The whole atmosphere when you walk in is calm and relaxing…not something I would expect from a place that does messy play with toddlers!

The kids have the freedom to experience a range of sensory/creative activities: water, sand, chalk, play doh, sticking, painting and colouring. The two tables at the back that you can see in the picture above have different activities on them each week and then there’s the shelves at the back…for someone like me who loves stationary, glitter, crafty type stuff – it’s a dream! The bottom two shelves are full of coloured paper, paint trays, pencils, the usual but then the shelves above have lots of lovely extras! For a small extra fee you can have mugs, egg cups, canvas’, pebbles and much more!
Jess has thought of everything with wipes on each table, towels by the water station, a dustpan and brush by the sand and a cute little play area with train set, dolls house, teepee and books. There are rustic hanging baskets with snacks and drinks and a beautiful ‘Birthday Tree’ painted on the wall for birthday boys and girls hand prints. There’s even tea and coffee for the adults!
Creatively inept? That doesn’t matter! Jess has lots of lovely ideas for creating pictures out of finger, hand and foot prints and we created lots of lovely things that are so good, they’ve made it into frames on the playroom walls!

We made one other special picture but that needs to be saved for surprise for a special someone!

Crafty Kids also offer parties which me and my friend were saying would be brilliant, not just for parties, but for groups of mummies and toddlers. Like my NCT group! At £10 per child, they get the room to themselves, themed activities based on your child’s interests, snacks and a special item to decorate (one of the ones that usually cost extra). I think this is such a unique and different idea for children’s party or just a fun idea for something to do as a group.

Mini R and I spent nearly two hours at Crafty Kids this rainy, dull May morning and we could have stayed longer! It was so lovely to be able to let my son enjoy the mess and being creative without worrying about him ruining any clothes, furniture, flooring etc. He was guilty of cross contaminating the water and sand (Sorry Jess!) but thoroughly enjoyed himself. I could not get over how calm and relaxing the whole experience was…apart from when Mini Me bonked someone on the head with a tractor and had to spend a minute sat in the corner!

So if you’re ever over Huddersfield way, give Crafty Kids a try. You won’t be disappointed!

Such a lovely idea, and the space looks amazing! I often take my daughter to something similar here in Swansea and she loves it, and it’s great to not have to worry about setting up, and cleaning up the activities! x #KCACOLS

  12. This is ace! Well done you. I hate all things crafty because I am not artistic and hate the mess. This sounds like a great place for the kids. I like the fact that they do parties. Wonder if I could just leave the kids there (at a party) and go and experience a Denby Dale pie. Isn’t Denby Dale famous for its pies?? xx #kcacols
